About Aspen, Colorado
Aspen Colorado is famously known as the hometown of legendary musician and songwriter, John Denver. Denver and his wife, Annie moved to Aspen in Christmas 1970 where they bought some land and built their dream home, "Starwood." In 1970, this was a small partially developed piece of land. The following year, John Denver broke ground and began building their "dream home" in Aspen.
John Denver's Starwood home is made up of two deeded lots totaling 7.6 acres and the home offers the most spectacular views in the valley of all 4 ski areas including Pyramid Peak and the 13,200 foot Mt. Daly. The home itself is over 6,000 sq ft with 5 bedrooms, 5.5 baths and is accessed by a circular driveway.
Local Aspen residents wanted John's former home to be turned into a museum to honor the musician who died in a plane crash off the coast of California in 1998 but the home was purchased by a family. Denver's home sold for $3.6 Million in March, 1999 and was sold by local Aspen REALTOR, Carol Dopkin.
The City of Aspen is a Home Rule Municipality and is the county seat. Aspen is the most heavily populated city of Pitkin County, Colorado. The last Census estimated population reached 5,804 in 2005.
Originally founded as a mining camp in the days of the Silver Boom in the late 1800's, Aspen today is so named because of the abundance of the aspen trees. Instead of drawing it's livelihood from silver mining, today Aspen is one of the hottest tourist attractions in north America. drawing thousands of visitors and Hollywood celebrities to enjoy Aspen's clean, crisp mountain air and in Winter, people enjoy some of the best skiing in the world.
As for real estate, Aspen has been unaffected by the recent decline in property values we have seen elsewhere across the country. Aspen has become a glittery play town for Hollywood celebrities and the rich and famous -- becoming a second or third home to many international jet setters.
Downtown Aspen is quaint and at first glance, appears to be a throwback to a town of 100 years ago. You can still see the familiar brick buildings that stood here when the town was filled with miners trying to strike their own claims in the rich silver mines Aspen's hills. Today, the town has transformed into an upscale shopping mecca that draws tourists from around the world. Downtown Aspen boasts Chanel, Dior, Luois Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Fendi and other stores that one would only expect to find on Hollywood Boulevard in California.
It's not unusual to bump into a Hollywood celebrity while enjoying your stay in Aspen. Many famous and Hollywood celebrities make Aspen their home including Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith, Kevin Costner, Don Johnson, Jack Nicolson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.
